June is Men’s Health Month—A Focus on Prevention

Jun 12, 2018 | Health and Wellness

June is Men’s Health Month, a time to encourage men to actively manage their health and wellness.

According to Centers for Disease Control (CDC) statistics, men are 33 percent less likely than women to visit the doctor. Avoiding the doctor means possibly missing out on catching problems early intervention could prevent. Instead, Sutter Health Plus encourages men to take action and make a habit of these––potentially life-extending––precautionary measures.

Get Recommended Screenings and Immunizations
Regular screenings for blood pressure, healthy weight and overall health may help you avoid potentially deadly illness. To find out what’s right for you, talk to your care provider about the latest immunization and health and screening recommendations.

Read Partnering for Your Best Health to learn what screenings the U.S. Preventive Task Force recommends for specific age groups. Sutter Health Plus covers a variety of preventive and routine physical maintenance exams (including screening tests) at no additional out-of-pocket cost to members.

Access the Health and Wellness Site
Our Health and Wellness site is designed with your physical and mental health in mind. The site conveniently provides interactive tools and resources for assessing your personal well-being and taking positive steps toward your health and wellness goals.

Accessible from the Member Portal, the online program begins with personal health assessment (PHA). The PHA is a questionnaire regarding your health history and lifestyle behaviors. You can use any of the various action plan modules from the site to help guide progress toward your health goals. The site includes a new health library featuring learning centers, a video library, a symptom checker, and more. With hundreds of topics to explore—from men’s health to prostate cancer—members can take charge of their health with a wide breadth of information.

Participate in Wellness Coaching
Smoking and high blood pressure can increase the risk of heart disease, the leading cause of death for men nationwide, according to the CDC. For members looking to reach their wellness goals and reduce risks, Sutter Health Plus offers one-on-one wellness coaching for tobacco cessation, stress management and healthy weight at no additional out-of-pocket cost. By combining the powerful support of one-on-one coaching with personal accountability, this program engages you in effectively managing your health condition or achieving wellness goals.

When you enroll in our Health Coaching program, our coaches commit to a weekly phone session for a period of eight to 12 weeks. If you need more time, our coaches will help you continue your journey as long as necessary.
